Q: What are the benefits of home education?
A: Home education allows parents to be in constant control of their child’s education. It allows parents to incorporate the values that they believe are important.
Q: Can I home educate my child even if I am not a teacher?
A: Yes. Of all the families that home educate, only a small fraction of them hold a teaching degree. Our chosen curriculum will lead parents, students, and teachers through each grade, in an easy to follow manner.
Q: When does the school year start?
A. We follow a traditional 10 month school calendar, beginning in August and ending in May. However, enrollment is offered year around.
Q: What does the typical week look like?
A. Our typical school hours will be 8:00-3:30; parents can bring their children at 7:45 each day. Students are allowed to leave when school work is completed if that is the family’s wishes. We teach the core subjects: Bible, Language Arts, Math, Science, and History on Mondays-Thursdays. Academic time will be from 8:00-12:00, followed by lunch, socialization, and project based learning until dismissal. Fridays are reserved for enrichment or fine arts. The possibilities are endless!
Q: What kind of testing will my child(ren) be required to take? A. VHE offers two types of testing. The first test is a placement test that is recommended for first time home education students. This test is helpful in determining appropriate grade level in which a student should begin coursework and choosing individualized curricula. The second type of test is the Stanford Achievement test offered in the spring. The test is helpful in determining students’ retention levels. The frequency of testing is solely left at the discretion of parents. VHE recommends a student be tested at least once during elementary level, middle school level, and every year in high school. It is recommended that students on a college path take the SAT test every year to familiarize themselves with test taking skills.
